Water softeners remove certain ions from the water, including calcium and magnesium ions, through an ion exchange process. In the course of this procedure, water flows through a unique media bed, which is often supersaturated with the positive ion sodium. The ion exchange process begins when hard water flows through the softening agent. Hardness minerals such as positively charged calcium and magnesium ions adhere to the resin beads while simultaneously releasing sodium from the beads into the water. The resin needs to be replenished as soon as the calcium and magnesium content reaches saturation. A concentrated salt brine solution (potassium chloride can also be used to create the salt brine for Softeners) is passed through the resin to recharge it. The trapped calcium and magnesium ions are replaced by the concentrated sodium and released into the waste water.
